Why Stelkampsveld?

Stelkampsveld is one of 162 Natura 2000 sites in the Netherlands. The Natura 2000 network includes breeding and resting sites designated under the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive, both of which are important tools to protect biodiversity in Europe. These sites were selected because of the disappearance of certain species and habitat types that need protection at the European level.

Stelkampsveld is home to dry heathland, wet heathland, healthy grassland, base-loving bluegrass land, and fen vegetation. This area is under threat, especially the base-loving bluegrass land that is disappearing in the Netherlands. Stelkampsveld is therefore of great importance for the preservation of these rare habitat types and plant species, such as the Great Mosquito orchid, Parnassia, and Wolf's claw moss.

Base-loving vegetation depends on both regional and local groundwater flows. The Secret Garden is pleased to contribute to the protection of Stelkampsveld and the flora and fauna that belong here.
